TRIED NUDE FIGURE DRAWING (for the first time).

Posted by Sabtastic - February 22nd, 2010

For the first time on friday, I decided to show up at a drop-in session for nude figure drawing (drawing naked people). I've been wanting to give it a try it for AGES, but was never really brave enough. So, seeing as a lot of people naturally share in that awkwardness or reluctance, I thought that I should share my experience!

Here's what I drew & how it went!
(don't worry, I picked some really G-rated sketches for you. Only butts.)

So, obviously, (scroll down) as you can see here, our model was female. Not the wrinkly old hairy/fat man I prepared myself to see. She was actually pretty too, so it lessened the awkwardness of it all. Now, this experience may vary. I'm not saying that everyone's going to get the ideal model on their first visit. For all I know, you could be that sorry sucker to end up with the old fat dude. So that's pretty much your only concern.

I was honestly so relieved that the model turned out to be of the same sex. I don't know if I'd quite have been ready for a stranger's wang in my face for four hours straight, being my first time and all... That's right. Four hours. D: Almost makes you feel sorry for the model, right? Trust me, though. It flies by. They're paid well, too. lol

Anyway, the session started off with a bunch of 2-5 minute "warm up" poses to sketch (the image on the right). Slowly the time limits increase to 10 minuntes, 15 minutes, and finally the last three or four 20 minute sketches (left). The poses change for every time limit, but the artist sticks to drawing the same model. Some places do it differently, I assume.

As far as medium type went, everyone had their own personal preference. The session was un-instructed, so nobody told you what to do, or critiqued your methods. I brought a mechanical pencil and sketchbook, but there were people there using card paper, charcoal, ink, you-name-it. One that caught my attention was the person sitting next to me, using an intuos 4 and his Mac. (note to self: bring tablet next time) Dx
His sketches turned out amazingly well, half because he was the only one capable of using such an accessable, limitless palette. Really made me want to come back for the sake of trying it all out digitally.

So, yeah! As you can see from the sketches, as long as you go in there with the mind-set that it's all for education, you'll quickly forget that you're drawing a total stranger in their birthday suit.

NOW THAT ISN'T SO SCARY, IS IT? c:
If you want to see more, i'll probably be posting the sketches on DeviantART.

cooooool!
it is base from "Virtual poses"?

Virtual...?
If you're wondering if these were online photos that I referenced, then no. They're not. :P
I drew them all while sitting in the same room as a naked chick.

no, sorry.
i guess you don't know about virtual poses.
never mind. but much cool the way of yours'
:)

lol

Well, "virtual" is a pretty vague term... I'm sure i'd know what it is if you explained it a little, rather than just use one word. Did you mean virtual as in 3D / computer generated...?

it's not a 3d either.
it's .MOV file, but you can rotate it. interactive mov file that allows you to change the angle.
sorry,i can't show you one.i don't have money to buy 'em.
we used them to enhance the poses of characters(animation).

I remember my first experience not being very (if not at all) awkward, and we had an old male model covered in body piercings that day. I guess the feelings vary from person to person.

Who knows, maybe I'll see a Left 4 Dead one WHILE I'm playing it too!

God dammit you and Shad are so lucky ya'll drawn hot nude babes now that messed up. :(
When I was 15 I signed myself up to one of those classes along with some other people which I was the youngest and people though it was odd. I wanted to draw a hot nude babe. While waiting in the art room for the madame to come instead a guy wearing a towel comes in and takes it off. I was like OMG I'm not drawing him, because it could make me look extremely gay, so I left the building and there went 50 dollars down the drain :(

Those drawings are very innapropriate.
Naw jk :D, they're very awesome, like the rest of your art

P.S. That male nude model was extremely attractive.

near perfect anatomic copy :D

i love your attention to every shade on her body from hair to heel

i also like your interpretations of each 2 minute pose.

you still never cease to impress sab :)

Aw, thanks bud! :D

as long as its not a wrinkly old man "shivers" then i guess it sounds intresting :/

I actually consider doing this at my college, these guys make about 13 something an hour. It's easy work, and if it's for the purpose of art, I am never modest about my body, or abilities. In other words, I am very dedicated to rising to the call of art, one could say.

This was a fun blog to read Sab. I must admit, it's cute to see how innocent you are about this kinda stuff. But, your allowed to be scared for your first time of drawing some one else naked :)

It's simply never okay to laugh after they remove their towels, though.

XD

Also I must admit that the picture of that fat dude had me rolling on the floor with laughter.

he's a sexy lil' butterball, 'aint he?

ahhh nude drawing... did it in college... everyone was really expecting the worse and thought it was highly funny... but as soon as the overall "shock" of just a naked girl infront of you passed... it was fine... she came round during breaks to look at everyones work... its much better from working from a blank piece of paper with no proper reference... you can understand the body much better and work on shading lots :3.... *thats what i did anyway*... looks like your taking this art thing to a next extream... go girl!

Yeah! I can agree completely. Everyone feels awkward at first, but eventually the person just turns into another 'object' for you to draw. There's very little sexual motive behind it - if any. (lol unless we're RealShadman of course. XD)

Learning from a photograph isn't quite the same, either. You don't have that same dimension to help you really grasp the way light hits skin, and you don't have to worry about your model moving slightly - which also helps you learn because you have to improvise.

Boy I remember live art

Nude Drawing
(asks teacher - so...uh...am I suppose to draw the penis?)

Nude Sculpting
(ask teacher - so...uh...am I suppose to sculpt the penis?)

Conducting
(so...uh...am I suppose to conduct with my penis?)

Lawl

Naw good for you. It's important to view the body without embarrassment. And nude drawing is a unique experience for first timers.

But my first time...I got a dude XD. Never tried it again after.

Course you could've save a few bucks just drawing from a book of anatomy.

Were the classes free?

Haha aww that sucks. XD
I think I really lucked out with my model. She was very easy to draw. Nothing extremely complicated with foreshortening or anything - mostly just straight up and down poses.

The classes are just drop-ins, though, so you pay $10.00 for each visit (which is 4 hours long) Sounded like a pretty good deal to me. :)

I WANNA MY POARN

Wow, this post doesn't have a lot of recognition. I'm surprised. (Newgrounds <3's Butts :P )

Hehe didn't frontpage this one - that's probably why there isnt' a lot of comments. :P

I agree though - NG definitely loves butts. D:

Haha, I'm surprised no one has demanded full frontal sketches yet! :P

lol I dunno -- I think Hulalaoo might have, but I didn't quite understand him. XD

I have a Wacom Bamboom Fun tablet since just a few weeks ago and I'm learning to use it, but my mind makes me think that drawing people directly would be easier on paper... Your experience regarding the person with an Intuos 4 and having great results proves me wrong.

i'm sure you said it in the large block of text i skimmed over, but was this for a class at a college or just some artist thingy?

It was just a drop-in session. From what I know, you don't need to be a student, just gotta bring your own materials. :P
10 bucks for 4 hours.

Been following your work for a little while now and always impressed with your output :D
Keep the great upbeat attitude and L4D craziness.
Looking forward to your next artwork! =)

Hey thanks, bro. :B

Sorry for not updating in a while, though. :\
Stuck writing some beastly research papers for the next week and a half..
I've got all these art ideas building up in my head, but NO TIME TO DRAW THEM !! AAAAGH D8

Cheers. :P

I knew you weren't a wuss....erm...
