Good point Sab

The question still remains if an artist SHOULD charge someone for their work. No? Shouldn't moral convictions be taken in to account?

Art should be an expression of ideas and emotions, if you're an anti mainstream, non conforming hippie. Selling your art seems a bit controversial.

Just the other side of the coin; not all art needs to have a price tag.

I don't know if this has been discussed on your post, but there's just too much to go through ;___;

And yet people submit their contributions for free to Newgrounds...

You can get ad revenue on Newgrounds though - just gotta set it up!

Wait, you were making money off of your art at the age of 12?

...maybe.. o:

(haha nothing big, just school-related art contests and local community stuff)

Oh hi, i heard you do art requests, im looking for artists like you to join this collab im running, don't worry it will be a massive hit on newgrounds and will get you lots of exposure, i know this is unpaid, but great experience and since im not selling anything there's no need for any payment. it will only take two or three hours of your time and after all i am a friend, right ;).

- Thank you for your submission to the Newgrounds Xmas Worm-

kthxbai

Omg that sounds so horrible when you put it that way!! xD

hahaha I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think it'd be fun!

I hear a lot from people on TV, on the net, saying "No one is owed a job." They drill it into this generation. And I do agree with that. But much, much less is the message stated "No one is owed cheap or free high-skilled labor."

Sad.

True facts.

A close friend of mine is starting to get into this scene, and even if he's just going to keep his stuff to himself as a personal hobby I'm going to point him to your post here.

I can see how devoting oneself to a subjective craft can lead to doubting much of one's ideas or abilities, so it's neat to see you trying to inject some confidence into your peers.

Thanks, I appreciate it!
Your friend is lucky to have you look out for him like that! c:

Cheers

a real artist doesnt sell their art. you're a poser and you disgust me

you're funny

Oh jeez, I didn't know it was this crazy in your field, but it does not surprise me. It's good you're wise to the business side of this stuff. There always seems to be people out there trying to get stuff for free/cheap or to outright scam other people out of their hard work.

For technical people, usually it's "hey can you do a quick website for me" or "hey can you take a quick look at my computer" or "I've got a great idea, I need you to code it up for a cut of the profits" (that never come). I don't mind helping people, but I have to be careful because there is almost no such thing as "quick" with this stuff and it can be quite a big time sink.

I've also lost $1000s of dollars and have burned dozens of hours of work due to not getting paid up front. I went so far as to take one group to small claims court, but was DESTROYED by the judge (one of the guys I sued was a lawyer and they're all apart of a good ol' boy's club). They happily continued to use the software I developed FOR YEARS after this. That was a GOOD learning experience ha.

Now I would handle things like you said - get everything in writing, take 50% up front, etc. You have to think of a lot of this like a lawyer would. Sad but true!

It must be like that in a lot more fields than I'm aware of. That's so shitty. :(
I know for sure I'm guilty of the "take a quick look at my computer" thing -- and my mechanic friends always end up with the "my car's making a funny noise, any idea what's wrong with it?"

For the most part, I'm willing to bet that we all do it, but we should be aware of when we do, and try to compensate that person as best we can for the time being. It's so awkward to be on the other side of the situation and have to ask or remind a friend for money. :\

I wish universities would teach courses about stuff like this..! :V
Something that would make people aware of the business side of their profession.. How to be smart about selling whatever skills/products they offer, and how the real world operates.

Yeah I wish a lot of this stuff was taught way early, like how to manage finances. We NEVER got taught this sort of thing. I'm still figuring this out at 33. Luckily there are TONS of books and other resources out there on this! And then there's the hard way, which has been my way ha.

Asking me to take a quick look usually isn't a problem for me - I'm more than happy to help people. I'm just saying that I personally have to be careful with what I accept. Sometimes a quick look means 20+ hours of work. Believe it or not, people can REALLY royally mess up their computers haha.

I had a friend once where we both did work for each other. He would say "let me put my business hat on" when he wanted to discuss business. I thought this was a pretty good way to segue from friend talk into business talk!

Haha - that last bit about the 'business hat' is a good one. I'm totally using that.

I had a similar experience where I agreed to help somebody out for free, and it turned into project after project after project-- I had to turn them down. The first thing they asked me to do was reasonable, but then 'all the other artists backed out' on their project, so I was the only one left with a RIDICULOUS amount of work. Like, we're talking multiple game sprites complete with full walk cycle animations, attack animations, facial emotions, etc etc etc etc. Something that was supposed to be 3 or 4 hours of work turned into WEEKS so I was like "NOPE. SORRY BRO." :(

To be fair, they offered to pay a really small amount later, but it was still just way too much work for such a fast deadline.

well thats just sabtastic

that's my name!

99desings is freaking awesome, never won any of the contests but i did end up in the finalists pool, its also great for practicing and improving graphic design work

I guess it has its perks depending on how you look at it...

I'm just trying to shed light on the shady aspects. :P
It's just not a good place to go if you're trying to make a full-time living on your artwork 'cause the risks outweigh the benefits.

I ran into this problem back in the 90's when I was producing commercial video; no pay but 'exposure' and possibly a few hundred bucks within a month of completion.... which probably went to the middle management stuffed shirt, who'd get bonus money for coming in well under budget, by stiffing me. Anyone in any kinda contract/freelance work, is susceptible to the many, varied whims of scammers.

Merry Christmas, to you, your sistas and family :)
